Question 1- In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our opening title
sequence doesn’t contain an establishing shot at the start. This is usually
done in order to give the viewers and idea of where it is set and a rough idea
of the time. We broke this convention because studies have shown that what we
fear the most is the unknown so restricting them from this information may
amplify the effect we were going for.
Most horror films that
we researched had male figures as the villains so we went against this in order
to effect the audience in two ways. Firstly it was done to surprise the viewers
as it goes against what they are used to in horror films and secondly we feel
that it well emphasise the creepy atmosphere we had built in the video. This is
achieved because of the contrast in sound that is produced when she screams to
break the silence.
Black is often related
to horror films and used regularly to hide things from the audience and make
them feel like they are missing something or that in almost every shot there is
something hiding in the shadows where they can’t see. In our video we filmed it
in a room with black walls in order to make the shadows as dark as possible in
order to emphasise the convention of a fear of the dark and unknown.
The film SINISTER is
famous for its use of shadows in order to constantly hide the scene from the
audience and give them the constant feeling that there is more in the shot than
what they can see. We took this and expanded on it in order to restrict the viewers
from the scene and produce a very creepy atmosphere.
